Music – Instrumental Lessons

Instrumental Lessons

With the support of a range of  Peripatetic Instrumental Teachers,  the Department can provide a wide variety of Instrumental and Vocal Experiences.

Lessons are available on a variety of Brass and Woodwind instruments, as well as Percussion, Guitar and Singing.

School subsidises these lessons, but there is a small cost of £50 per term  for parents, payable in half-termly instalments of £25. Skills gained through this aspect of Musical education help to support a variety of learning situations, enhancing Co-ordination, Mathematical skills, as well as developing Creative skills.

All musical activities work towards participating in concerts held in the school and the community.

Please note: Should your son/daughter decide to stop lessons, the school must be informed by parents in writing, giving ONE term’s notice accompanied by the appropriate fee.

The Blue Form on the back of the Application Letter should be returned by Friday 15th September. If you’ve mis-placed the form – ask Mrs Hetherington  for a new copy.

For your information, this is a copy of the letter and application form:

If you have not made a payment in June/July for the first Half-Term, please include this first payment, cash or cheque, payable to St Joseph’s School, with the completed application form (attached) in a labelled envelope placed in the post box outside the Finance Office in the foyer. All forms must be returned to the Finance Office by 15th September. Subsequent payments should be accompanied by the Payment Card, which doubles as your son /daughter’s Corridor Pass. This card is proof of receipt of your payment, and must be available when leaving a lesson: do not lose it.

Payment cards will be returned by the Form Tutor within a week of payment. Fees must be paid in advance of lessons. If payments fall behind by more than two weeks the lessons will be suspended. Please note, if a parent/guardian falls behind with instrumental fees for their child, it may put their acceptance on future school trips in jeopardy until all monies owed have been paid.

We hope that you understand that a commitment has been made to employ Instrumental Staff. So, should your son/daughter decide to stop lessons, you need to inform the Finance Office in writing, giving 1 Terms’ notice and payment of £450to cover staffing. This is equal to 1 Term’s payment.

Lessons are held weekly, and it is only in special circumstances that lessons will be cancelled. Timetables are on the Music Notice Boards, and on the school website.

To make the best of these lessons, pupils need to:

    1. Be on time
    1. Be prepared for the lessons – instrument, appropriate music, practice sheet, and Music Corridor Pass.
    1. Return promptly to their subject classes, making every effort to catch up on work missed. (Lessons are on a rotation, so as far as possible the same lesson is not missed on a regular basis.)
    1. Practice regularly.

Musical instruments should be included in household insurance policies – under the ‘All Risks’ section. This should cover the instrument for use at home, school and any concert venues, and travel to and from school. The instruments are not covered by a school policy, and therefore should NOT be left in school overnight. Instruments owned by school, or rented from LSS or any other source, should also be included in these insurance arrangements.Mrs J Kennedy
