The three-year course follows the National Curriculum and leads to a GCSE in mathematics through the AQA Examination Board.
The course covers a range of mathematical skills including ‘Using and Applying mathematics’ and the main areas of the curriculum:

• Number
• Ratio, proportion and rates of change
• Algebra
• Geometry and measures
• Probability
• Statistics

Students will also learn and use many aspects of the Business & Enterprise capabilities, including problem solving, risk taking and financial literacy.
Pupils are entered for the examination at a level appropriate to their ability; there are currently two levels of entry:

• Higher Level: Grades available 9 – 4
• Foundation Level: Grades available 5 – 1

Students are taught by qualified mathematics teachers, using a variety of styles and techniques to ensure students both understand and enjoy mathematics. ICT is a crucial part of mathematics and wherever appropriate we use technology to further students understanding. The department has laptop projectors in every room, to allow for engaging and interactive ICT based mathematics lessons to help deliver the curriculum.

GCSE Specification
The specification is designed to allow pupils to be inspired, motivated and challenged by following a broad, coherent and worthwhile course of study.
It will help learners develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards mathematics, and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.
This will prepare students for A level maths and further maths.

The course will enable candidates to:

• develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
• acquire and use problem solving strategies
• select and apply mathematical techniques and methods in everyday and real-world situations
• reason mathematically, make deductions, inferences and draw conclusions
• interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

The scheme of Assessment comprises three final exams of 1 hour 30 mins.
Paper 1 – Non-Calculator
Paper 2 – Calculator
Paper 3 – Calculator
Each paper is equally weighted.

We offer further maths GCSE as an enrichment for the more able.

Revision Materials

For students to perform in examinations to their true potential, quality revision is essential. Unlike other subjects, revising for mathematics doesn’t just involve reading! To revise mathematics, you have to read, re-read, learn and recall formulae, learn the basic techniques, and most importantly of all, PRACTICE!!!

Several of the current Maths teaching staff are very experienced exam markers for GCSE exam boards. As such, we share a wealth of insight in to the skills required to maximise the potential of all our pupils, and are at the forefront of changes in the Maths curriculum.

It is definitely the case that in mathematics, ‘Practice makes Perfect’.

We cannot emphasise enough how important it is to practice mathematics. Practice can include completing on-line exercises, text book exercises, even questions taken from your class book.
When preparing for an exam, nothing beats working through past exam papers. Good exam technique is as important as knowing all the facts!
