What will pupils Learn?

We follow the Edexcel specification for Business Studies. All lessons are taught by Miss Jackson in BE2.

Pupils taking Business Studies should have a good grasp of the English Language due to the amount of extended writing required, it is also an advantage to be confident working with numbers as there are a number of finance modules throughout key stage 4.

During year 9 pupils look at the issues involved in setting up and running a small business or franchise. They will develop basic business skills and be taught general business theories.

While studying the first two units of this course student will learn many new terms and concepts. They will be introduced to the world of small businesses and will look at what makes someone a successful business person. Students will find out how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business.

They will also understand how to make a business effective, manage staff and money well as well as appreciating how the world around us affects small businesses.

How will students be assessed?

Pupils will be regularly assessed through completion of exam style questions both in class and for homework.

In addition, each month they will have a number of business definitions to learn and will take a small test to assess their knowledge of these key terms and basic business theories.

Formal Assessments will take place three times during Year 9:

November – Key words and basic business concepts – written paper with multi choice and extended writing tasks

February – Practise controlled assessment (focus on use of business terminology and understanding of basic business concepts) based on previous GCSE tasks. This is a project based assessment which will take pupils approximately 2 weeks to complete.

May – End of year 9 mock exam paper including multi choice (unit one) and extended answer (unit three).
