St Joseph’s school is situated near the town centre of Workington within the Borough of Allerdale. It is one of three secondary schools within the town. St Joseph’s is a popular school and has been oversubscribed for a number of years.
In recent years Workington was part of a European Regeneration Programme which included a £35million redevelopment of the town centre. The retail outlets provided 550 jobs within the retail sector, as well as other jobs associated with other developments. These include housing and leisure opportunities with the quayside and harbour side redevelopment and a new stadium and sports centre. Some of these developments are still in the planning stages. This significant investment has allowed regeneration activity through promoting economic development and diversification. There are many wards within Workington which are socially deprived and the area still attracts funding to address issues around employment, skills etc. The school has been involved in working with partners on the delivery of some of these projects through their community work.
Workington is situated on the Solway Coast and is on the fringes of the Western Lake District. There is excellent housing ranging from the very affordable town houses to delightful more sought after properties within easy reach of the main areas of population. The standard of education is high with a good mix of state schools with high attainment levels.
The Borough is home to around 93,000 people. Nearly two thirds of the population live and work within the triangle formed by Maryport, Workington and Cockermouth. There is a large rural landscape of dispersed hill farms, forests, mountains and lakes covering the fertile Solway Plain stretching northward towards Carlisle. Other towns include Keswick, Silloth, Wigton and Aspatria.
The Northern Lakes including Loweswater, Crummock Water, Buttermere, Derwentwater, Ennerdale, Bassenthwaite are all close by and provide opportunities for many recreational activities. The nearby Keswick Theatre by the Lake provides excellent Cultural events and a season of plays each year. The Sands Centre at Carlisle provides cultural events such as visiting orchestras, operas etc.
