Saturday the 24th of February saw 6 of Workington’s walking football group travel to Soccer World at Carlisle to compete for the FA People’s Cup. The event, which is advertised on TV is played nationally with local rounds followed by regional and national finals with the eventual winners being presented with their trophy at the FA Cup Final in May.
The team were made up of players aged 51 to 75 and were naturally nervous but soon found their stride as they drew their first match 1-1 against Carlisle United second team. A strong Carlisle first team boasting a couple of ex-pros proved to be too good resulting in a 7-0 reverse in Workington’s second match but after a short break they gathered themselves, reorganised the positions and were soon scoring goals winning their last three matches 6-0, 8-0 and 3-1 against Silloth, Carlisle third team and Penrith respectively.
With Carlisle first team running out as winners Workington were delighted to find out they had finished as runners-up with all players enjoying what turned out to be a fantastic day.
