Reflection: Education for Mind, Body and Spirit

School is as much a place of moral and spiritual formation as it is of skills, knowledge and understanding. Unfortunately, becoming a good person is even more difficult than becoming someone who achieves ‘good’ grades, it is the work of a lifetime.

Saint Benedict, who thought education of every kind was very important, likened his Christian community, which was like a school, to a sack full of rough rocks which gets shaken up. Gradually, sharp and rough rocks have their edges knocked off and become rounded and smooth. This describes the process of learning to live and work together. It is not, of course, a completely painless process! But each one of us can play a part in being a good influence on others so that we become not just smarter but also better people. The world, more than anything, needs good people.

How could I be a good person to those around me today? What rough edges do I have that might need to be smoothed off? Spend a few moments in silence thinking about that and asking God to help you be a good person.

Prayer by St Benedict

Gracious and Holy Father, give us the wisdom to discover You,

the intelligence to understand You,

the diligence to seek after You,

the patience to wait for You,

eyes to behold You,

a heart to meditate upon You,

and a life to proclaim You,

through the power of the Spirit of Jesus, our Lord.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen.

Our Lady Queen of Peace pray for us.
St Joseph pray for us

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen
